Liberty: Ukrainians' path to freedom told through creative dance, music and storytelling

This summer, Mission of Innocents produced another powerful Ukrainian story Edinburgh Festival Fringe with “Liberty”, performed at C Aurora in Lauriston Halls.

Liberty, Mission of Innocents at Edinburgh Fringe Festival

Created and directed by members of the displaced Ukrainian community, "Liberty" explored Ukraine from the 1990s to the present day focusing on the country's continuous fight for freedom and the strength, courage and resilience of its people.

What made "Liberty" particularly special was that it was created and performed by members of the displaced Ukrainian community living in Scotland. The performers drew on their own culture, history and lived experiences to create a performance that was both deeply personal and universally powerful.

The production was led by Tetiana Hordiienko, Mission of Innocents' creative director, whose vision helped bring the story to life. Tetiana’s story was also featured in media coverage by The Scotsman, giving a broader audience insight into the creative process and the importance of sharing Ukrainian stories.

The atmosphere in the theatre at the end of the performance was emotional, energetic and full of appreciation for the performers. It was a memorable moment of connection between the cast and audience. The children in the production were more than pleased to perform an encore.

"Liberty" was more than a performance. It was an expression of Ukrainian identity, resilience and the ongoing fight for freedom.

We are incredibly proud of everyone who helped to bring "Liberty" to Edinburgh Festival Fringe and grateful to everyone who supported the production, attended the performance and helped us share this important story.
